A flight headed to Phoenix reportedly had to return to Houston due to the record-breaking heat according to ABC 13 in Houston.

The United flight operated by Mesa Airlines was reportedly minutes away from Sky Harbor Airport before being sent back.
ABC 13 had a statement from the company on the flight.
“United Express flight 6181 operated by Mesa Airlines, returned to Houston due to weather in Phoenix. Phoenix passengers will be accommodated on an extra flight that has been added for tomorrow morning.”
On Sunday, a new record high temperature was set in Phoenix at 118 degrees.
The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning Sunday through Wednesday with highs projected around 118 on Sunday and Monday.

The original article said: "It is illegal for planes to land or take off once the temperature hits 120 degrees because of the effects the heat have on airplane equipment." This is NOT true. Planes couldn't take off many years ago when it was over 120 because they didn't have certification on runway lengths for those temps, but that has long since been corrected, and this is takeoff, not landing, and the temperature today at the airport was NOT 120 degrees or above.
The reason is this. Hot air is less dense than cool air. This means you develop less lift at the same speed. This would mean that landing and approach speed for a loaded airliner might be approaching un-safe limits. It does not mean that it could not be done.
No, they had to get the passengers in Houston. It's easy to track all of this from the United website and flight tracker. It's all a financial thing and will give them a reason to not compensate passengers. They don't have to pay hotel and food for weather. Hopefully United takes action for the passengers to make things right.
