Fire, hazmat crews subdue blaze at Glendale asphalt plant

PHOENIX – Firefighters beat back a potentially hazardous blaze at a Glendale asphalt plant Friday morning, authorities said.

Crews from Glendale, Phoenix and Peoria responded around 10:30 a.m. to the facility on Missouri Avenue near 51st Avenue, where a silo containing liquid asphalt was burning, the Glendale Fire Department said in a Facebook post.

The structure was near other buildings containing hazardous materials, and the response included hazmat crews.

Firefighters used heavy volumes of water in an aggressive attack to contain the flames to the silo while staying away from the most dangerous areas, authorities said.

“No injuries were reported and the cause was deemed accidental,” the Facebook post said. “The speedy containment of this fire was incredible as this had potential to cause extensive damage.”
