PHOENIX — If you drive on eastbound Interstate 10 near Phoenix, you need to plan to use a different route on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
The Arizona Department of Transportation has announced that eastbound I-10 would be closed between Riggs Road and State Route 347 from 7 p.m. Wednesday to 10 a.m. Thursday so crews can repair the Gila River Bridge.
While the bridge is safe to drive on, ADOT found a hole in the right lane of the bridge this week. Steel plates were placed over the hole, but a permanent fix is needed.
Traffic will be detoured along Riggs Road to State Route 547 to reconnect with I-10. But beware: ADOT expects the detour route to be crowded.
Instead, drivers are urged to find another route.
Those coming in from the west can take State Route 85 to eastbound Interstate 8. The freeway joins with I-10 near Casa Grande.
Another route drivers can use is to take US 60 east to southbound State Route 79, followed by State Route 87, to reconnect with I-10.
Unfortunately, that’s not the only closure drivers on I-10 will have to deal with this week.
ADOT is also closing a westbound 21-mile stretch of the roadway between State Route 90 west of Benson and State Route 83 east of Tucson from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 5 a.m. Thursday.
Delays for westbound drivers could be as long as two hours.
The closure is the third and final one planned for replacement of an I-10 bridge over Davidson Canyon and repaving in the area.
