FEMA approves $113M to support economic recovery in Arizona

Arizona was among the U.S. states and territories Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approved to receive economic support funding as part of the federal agency’s ongoing disaster and COVID-19 recovery program.

The Grand Canyon State will be injected with about $113 million, as Dignity Community Care, or the Dignity Health chapter of Arizona, will receive close to $105 million. Contract services, such as inpatient clinical care and diagnoses, will be reimbursed with this funding, according to a Thursday press release.

Another $5.5 million will go to the Havasupai Tribe, which resides in a remote part of the Grand Canyon. The approved grant will go toward “permanent repairs to bridges and ancestral burial grounds as a result of severe flooding,” the release said.

The remainder of the funding (about $2.4 million) was assigned to the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs. It is covering any resources the agency has spent to combat COVID-19.

Nevada, Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands will share the remainder of the $307 million approved in this batch of funding.

FEMA is offering $5.6 billion total to states, territories and tribes in the federal assistance program. It is also sweeping the nation in step with President Donald Trump’s executive order “Establishing the Task Force to Eliminate Fraud,” which was signed on March 16.

Applications were reopened in late March for a similar relief program, the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities program, after a federal judge order reversed its cancellation last year.
