Suspect in fatal shooting in south Phoenix last month taken into custody

PHOENIX – A suspect was arrested Wednesday in connection with a fatal shooting in south Phoenix last month, authorities said.

Luis Alejandro Mejia Mollinedo, 33, was booked into a Maricopa County jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, dangerous drug possession/use and criminal trespassing. His bond was set at $1 million, according to jail records.

Mejia Mollinedo is accused of killing 41-year-old Gabino Martinez Jr. in the early-morning hours of Aug. 15, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Officers responded to the area of 13th and Southern avenues around 3:45 a.m. and found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Multiple individuals were detained, interviewed and released at the time, but nobody was taken into custody until Wednesday’s arrest four weeks later.
