Intruder dies after being shot while breaking into Buckeye residence

PHOENIX — A homeowner shot and killed an intruder on Sunday night in Buckeye, authorities said.

The Buckeye Police Department said the shooting took place around 9 p.m. in a neighborhood near Watson and Yuma roads.

Police who responded to reports of shots fired arrive to the home on Desert Bloom Street and found a man inside suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

They also found three people inside the home who weren’t injured.

Emergency medical crews arrived to the home to treat the alleged intruder, 27-year-old Michael Diaz, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Currently, investigators don’t believe Diaz knew the family.

What happened before shooting of home intruder in Buckeye?

Before the fatal shooting, a mother and her two adult children heard banging on their front door. A woman answered the door to Diaz, after which he tried to force his way into the home, police said.

A man who lived in the home then grabbed a handgun.

Just as Diaz broke through the security door and stepped inside the home, the male resident shot him, police said.
