Mesa collision leaves 2 dead, 2 seriously injured

The collision shut down Stapley Drive in both directions Sunday night, but the road has since reopened, police said Monday.

Police released the names of two people who died after a Sunday night collision between a pickup truck and an SUV.

Gloria Apolinar Matias, 74, and Idolinda Romero Apolinar, 44, died after the two-vehicle crash near Seventh Avenue and Stapley Drive, according to a Monday update from the Mesa Police Department.

One died at the scene, while the other died at a local hospital, although police did not identify which was which.

Two other adults involved in the collision were seriously injured, although their injuries are not considered life-threatening, police said.

Police do not believe impairment was a factor in the collision but are still investigating whether speed contributed.
