PHOENIX — The Falcon Field Airport in Mesa announced the opening of a new taxiway that’s meant to shorten the time planes are on the runway and support expansion of the facility.
Taxiway G routes planes from the north to the south ends of the airport, leading to fewer delays and fuel efficiency.
Why did the Mesa Falcon Field Airport need an expansion?
Construction of Taxiway G was part of the Falcon Field Airport’s two-part project. The other part of the project came from recommendations from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to update Taxiways D7 and D8 in order to be in compliance with safety standards.
“The completion of Taxiway G is an exciting milestone for Falcon Field Airport and the City of Mesa,” Mesa Mayor John Giles said in a press release. “This project not only enhances the efficiency and safety of our airport operations but also reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting aviation growth and innovation in Mesa.”
The total cost of the project was more than $4.1 million and received funding from the FAA, Arizona Department of Transportation and the city of Mesa.
The changes were part of the five-year Falcon Field Capital Improvement Program and the Mesa City Council approved Airport Master Plan that were both created to help redevelop the airport as it continues to grow. Part of the master plan’s goal was to evaluate future flight demands and to help the airport meet safety guidelines.
“This new infrastructure will support the airport’s growth as a key asset to Mesa’s economy, we are committed to ensuring Falcon Field remains a premier aviation hub,” Mesa District 5 Councilmember Alicia Goforth said.
In July 2022, Falcon Field opened a renovated viewing area next to the terminal building.
