Expect restrictions on I-10 as West Valley widening project continues in 2022

PHOENIX – As work to improve traffic flow on Interstate 10 in the far West Valley progresses, drivers can expect to see regular restrictions along the Buckeye corridor in the new year.

In the first extended adjustment related to the project, the westbound I-10 off-ramp and eastbound on-ramp at Miller Road are scheduled to be closed for several weeks starting in late January, the Arizona Department of Transportation said in a press release Monday.

Detours will be provided via Yuma Road.

Motorists can also expect to see portions of I-10 in Buckeye regularly reduced to one lane for weekend and overnight work.

The centerpiece of the plan is the expansion of I-10 to three lanes in each direction over 8 miles between Verrado Way and State Route 85.

The work started in July and was expected to take about two years to complete, ADOT said.

The project also includes the conversion of the Miller and Watson road interchanges into diverging diamond designs and the widening of the two cross streets to at least two lanes in each direction at I-10.

Diverging diamonds can reduce congestion and make the interchanges safer, ADOT said.

Funding for the $85 million project comes from Proposition 400, the half-cent sales tax for regional transportation approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004.
