Excessive heat warning issued for metro Phoenix for Thursday

PHOENIX — The metro Phoenix area hasn’t escaped the scorching temperatures yet.

An excessive heat warning will take effect at 10 a.m. Thursday and will be in place until 8 p.m, according to the National Weather Service.

Additionally, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has issued a high pollution advisory for ozone for the day.

The high temperature on Thursday is expected to hit 109 degrees in Phoenix, which would break the daily-high record for the date set back in 1962.

After Thursday, the mercury will take a slight dip with temperatures expected to peak at 105 degrees on Friday and Saturday.

Phoenix experienced the hottest meteorological summer on record, which includes June, July and August.

Between June and August, Phoenix reported 50 days with a high temperature of at least 110 degrees, surpassing the record of 33 days set in 2011.

During periods of extreme heat, experts advise people to stay hydrated, limit the amount of time outside, try to stay inside air-conditioned buildings and remember to check on elderly family members and neighbors.

People are also advised to watch for warning signs of heat-related illnesses, which can include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, weakness, headache and nausea.
