Excessive heat warning in effect Thursday with Phoenix temperatures to exceed 110 degrees

PHOENIX — The second excessive heat warning in a week in Phoenix will go into effect Thursday with temperatures expected to surpass 110 degrees.

Thursday’s high is forecast to be 112 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The excessive heat warning will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“There’s a dome of high pressure of sinking air that’s going to be moving over the region…with the sinking air, we’re expecting temperatures exceeding 110 degrees,” Marvin Percha, a meteorologist with NWS in Phoenix, told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

As per usual, Phoenix will close Camelback Mountain’s Echo and Cholla trails and all trails associated with Piestewa Peak Trailhead from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the excessive heat warning in effect.

Phoenix began closing the popular trails last summer during excessive heat warning days to reduce injuries and deaths, as well as protect rescue personnel.

There will be a shift away from 110-degree weather after Thursday.

Friday’s high will drop to 109 degrees before 104 degrees on Saturday and 103 degrees on Sunday.

Chances of precipitation will enter the forecast Friday night, two days after the official start of the monsoon season.

Friday has a 20% chance of rain before a jump to 40% on Saturday.

“The good news is this weekend we could see a preview of the monsoon season,” Percha said.
