Evacuations lifted for San Rafael Fire near Arizona-Mexico border as containment grows

PHOENIX — Evacuations for the San Rafael Fire near the Arizona-Mexico border were lifted Tuesday as containment grew on the blaze.

Those in San Rafael Valley and residences on Canelo Pass Road and Canelo Road could return home, the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management said in a press release.

The blaze, which started Saturday night and is located 22 miles southeast of Patagonia within the San Rafael State Natural Area, swelled to 11,611 acres and containment grew to 12%.

Firefighters were looking to construct containment lines on the southern and western side of the fire on Tuesday.

Forest Road 799 remained closed for firefighter safety with crews continuing to work along the roadway.

Fire officials are finding people in burn areas and are asking for them to stay away from hazards, such as ash pits.

About 200 personnel, including hand crews, engines, water tenders and aircraft resources, are fighting the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
