Environmental group’s study rates Phoenix third-best in solar power

A new report has ranked Phoenix third in the country when it came to cities with the most solar power.

The report, “Shining Cities 2016: How Smart Local Policies Are Expanding Solar Power in America,” rated Phoenix just behind Los Angeles and San Diego for cities with the most solar power.

The report by the Environment Arizona Research and Policy Center said that at the end of 2015, solar panels and solar energy in Phoenix had produced enough clean energy to power 20,500 homes.

The group’s campaign organizer, Jennifer Wong, said there was still room for improvement.

“While it’s really great that Phoenix is still a national leader when it comes to solar installations, we should commit to doing more so that we can achieve a 100 percent renewable energy future,” Wong said.

She said that Environment Arizona is urging cities to continue to develop solar power. “It is good fof our health, it’s good for our environment, and it’s good for our wallets. Cities have really been at the forefront of environmental change for decades, and there’s no reason for them to stop now,” said Wong. “Polluters can’t change the fact that solar power makes sense for all of us.”

Wong added that solar energy in the 64 cities that were surveyed for the report produced enough solar power to power 5.4 million homes nationwide last year.
