PHOENIX — Why fix what isn’t broken? That’s what Arizona parents said about baby names in 2018.

Emma and Liam topped a preliminary list of the most popular baby names in Arizona for the third year in a row, according to the state’s Department of Health Services.

Olivia, Mia, Isabella and Sophia rounded out the top five most popular names for girls in the state, while Noah, Sebastian, Oliver and Benjamin made up the top five boys’ names.

Dr. Cara Christ with the department told KTAR News 92.3 FM that, while some have traded places, the top girls’ names have stayed the same for the past two years.

However, Alexander and Daniel, which were Nos. 4 and 5, respectively, last year, were knocked out of the top five this year.

“It’s interesting to track and see how they have changed over the years,” Christ said.

The data, according to Christ, was collected using birth certificates submitted to the department’s Bureau of Vital Records.

An official count of the year’s top baby names will be verified and posted online at the department’s website in February.
