Eloy firefighters pull off a bray-ve rescue, saving a donkey from a canal

PHOENIX — Eloy firefighters rescued a donkey trapped in a Central Arizona Project canal early Sunday morning.

Crews arrived near Highway 87 and Shedd Road to find the animal stuck in the water and struggling to free itself. Firefighters used ropes and vehicles to secure the donkey and pull it from the canal.

“At no time did personnel enter the water,” the Eloy Fire District said in a social media post.

Battalion Chief Travis Hartman and firefighter Hannah Hartman, both experienced in livestock handling, were the ones who freed the donkey. Fire crews checked the animal for injuries once it was on dry land and found none.

Crews dried and calmed the animal until a local livestock expert retrieved it.

Officials said they are working to locate the donkey’s owner.

“How did they donkey fall into the canal? The world may never know, but we will gladly take the happy ending,” the department said in the post.
