Ducey order allows food trucks at Arizona rest stops amid virus outbreak

PHOENIX — Truck drivers and others traversing the Arizona highways now have an additional food option as Gov. Doug Ducey issued an executive order on Wednesday to allow food trucks at the state’s eight Arizona Department of Transportation rest stop areas.

The Federal Highway Administration recently permitted states to allow food trucks at rest stops while the national emergency declaration from the coronavirus outbreak is in place.

Ducey in the press release mentioned the order is aimed at supporting truck drivers who are working long hours to keep grocery store shelves stocked and medical professionals equipped with the supplies they need.

“(Wednesday’s) order will allow long-haul truck drivers to buy nutritious food during their trips, and will help increase business for food trucks at this time,” Ducey said in a press release.

Food truck owners can acquire a free permit to operate at the rest stops on the ADOT website, with the permit being valid for 30 days.

Owners must follow all federal, state and local guidelines for operation during the coronavirus outbreak.

In an effort to further assist truck drivers, ADOT recently re-opened the previously shuttered Christensen rest stop along Interstate 17 and Parks rest stop on Interstate 40, and increased the weight limit for commercial vehicles delivering supplies for the coronavirus relief effort to 90,000 pounds.
