Ducey asks Arizonans to ‘stay the course’ as virus numbers improve

PHOENIX — Gov. Doug Ducey asked Arizonans Thursday to continue with mitigation strategies that have helped decrease coronavirus case metrics across the state in past weeks.

“I urge everyone to stay the course, stay physically distanced, stay smart and healthy, and continue to mask up,” Ducey said during a press briefing.

Arizona has made steady progress in the fight against COVID-19 since emerging as a national hotspot in early June.

The rolling seven-day average for newly reported cases declined Wednesday to 873.43, the lowest seen since June 5, according to tracking by The Associated Press.

The seven-day average of newly reported deaths dipped to 41, the lowest mark since July 9.

The seven-day average for new cases peaked July 6 at 3,844, and the stat for deaths reached a high of 94 on July 30.

The slowed spread comes after the implementation more than a month ago of face mask requirements by local governments in many areas — including all of Maricopa County — and statewide executive orders to close businesses such as bars and gyms and to restrict restaurant occupancy.

“We can’t let up. We can’t let our guard down now,” Ducey said. “We are not taking a victory lap. This is not a celebration.”

“This is a highlight on what’s working and an ask that we continue doing what works.”
