PHOENIX — Authorities said a driver was killed in a hit-and-run early Monday on a Phoenix freeway.

A spokesman for the Arizona Department of Public Safety said the man was killed after stepping out of his silver SUV, which had broken down on northbound Interstate 17 near Thomas Road.

The victim, a man in his 20s, had been forced to park in such a way that his vehicle was partially blocking the right-hand traffic lane.

The hit-and-run truck was described as a white or light-colored Chevy pickup with a short bed and custom tail lights in the center of the rear bumper or tailgate.

The driver got off the freeway at Bethany Home Road.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
