Driver dies after colliding with Valley Metro bus in south Phoenix while fleeing separate crash

A driver was left dead after fleeing a crash and colliding with a Valley Metro bus in south Phoenix on Monday night, authorities said.

Officers were called to the area of 16th Street and Baseline Road around 10:18 p.m. due to a gray 2017 Toyota Camry colliding with a Valley Metro bus, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the Camry overturned and the driver, identified as a 40-year-old man, inside unresponsive.

The man was taken by the Phoenix Fire Department to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Neither the bus driver nor its passengers were injured in the crash. Authorities noted the bus driver did not show any signs of impairment.

Detectives determined the Camry was driving westbound on Baseline Road aggressively and at a high rate of speed before hitting the bus, which was also traveling westbound. They added the Camry was fleeing a different collision at 24th Street and Baseline Road.

Police did not identify the driver as they were still trying to contact his next-of-kin.
