PHOENIX — Although winter does not officially start until next Monday, the city of Flagstaff, Arizona, has gotten a head start on its winter decor with a larger-than-average amount of snowfall.

As of Friday, exactly one week before Christmas, the total amount of snow fallen in Flagstaff has reached 25.2 inches. This is approximately four inches more than the average of 20.9 inches.

Justin Johndrow with the National Weather Service of Flagstaff said last year’s snow total at this time was just 2.4 inches.

This season saw snow as early as October, but Johndrow said the snow is not over just yet. Thanks to El Nino, northern Arizona is expected to see even more above average snowfall within the next couple of months.

The storm system has been especially kind to the Valley this winter, coating Arizona in layers of much-needed snow, rain and sleet.

On Monday, Arizona Snowbowl in Flagstaff tweeted 16 inches of snow fell that one day alone.

On Friday, Arizona Snowbowl opened its first chairlift in 30 years, Humphreys Peak chairlift. The lift can seat up to four people per seat and spans a half-mile.

Temperatures even dipped into the negatives across northern Arizona. Many school districts cancelled classes earlier this week to respond to the colder-than-usual temperatures.

Flagstaff is expected to see the same cooler temperatures in the upcoming week, with an average high of 46 degrees and an average low of 22.2 degrees, according to the National Weather Service of Flagstaff.
