DPS trooper shoots at driver after rundown attempt in Phoenix

PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Public Safety said a trooper was nearly run over before he shot at a driver early Friday on a Phoenix street.

DPS said the trooper pulled over a driver in a the vehicle described as a 2017 white Dodge Charger near Glendale and 23rd avenues at 12:30 a.m.

As the trooper got out of his patrol unit, DPS said the driver hit the gas pedal, made a U-turn and headed for him.

The unidentified trooper, who was not injured, fired his weapon at the oncoming vehicle, but the driver escaped.

The vehicle had tinted windows and temporary plates.

Glendale Avenue was closed in both directions from the shooting site to Interstate 17 for the investigation.

No other details were immediately available.

It was the third shooting that involved a DPS trooper this year, and 20th overall by law enforcement in the Valley, according to KTAR News 92.3 FM research.
