PHOENIX — Downtown Phoenix traffic and bus service will see several alterations starting this month because of major transit construction projects.
The changes are coming because of the new South-Central Light Rail Extension and redevelopment of the Central Station Transit Center.
Central Avenue will be closed to vehicles between Washington and Jefferson streets beginning from Monday until work on the new light rail line is completed.
As a result, Valley Metro bus riders will board and deboard at the northeast corner of Washington street and Central Avenue.
The transit center at 300 N. Central Ave. will then close Oct. 26. The new Central Station will include mixed-use development with retail, affordable housing and open space, while serving as a connection point for light rail and bus riders.
All local Express, RAPID and DASH routes through the center will detour for three years.
Light rail riders can board and exit from the station at Van Buren and Central Avenue or Van Buren and First Avenue during construction.
Central Station pass sales and customer service operations will be suspended Oct. 19-25 and be moved to the north entrance of the Phoenix Transit Department building at 302 N. First Ave., Suite 120, starting Oct. 26.
