Displaced animals from Hurricane Ida arrive in Arizona

PHOENIX — Dozens of dogs and cats displaced because of Hurricane Ida’s impact in Louisiana have a new home in Arizona.

Members of the Arizona Humane Society made an overnight trip to El Paso, Texas, on Friday to collect 40 animals that were evacuated from the Louisiana SPCA located in New Orleans.

The pets were considered high priority in being moved out of the hurricane zone due to power outages, fuel shortages and other limitations.

There was space in AHS shelters for the animals after a weeklong adoption event that ended Sunday placed 384 pets in new homes.

The animals are undergoing medical exams to determine which ones need temporary foster care and which ones will be immediately ready for adoption.

It’s not the first time AHS has taken in pets as part of a relief effort from a Louisiana hurricane.

The shelter rescued more than 200 pets in 2005 during Hurricane Katrina.

AHS has brought in 843 pets this year from other Arizona shelters and from disasters such as the Telegraph and Backbone fires, and flooding in Gila Bend.
