Desert Diamond Casino West Valley announces date for reopening

PHOENIX — Another Phoenix-area casino is getting ready to start taking your money again.

Desert Diamond Casino West Valley announced Monday it will reopen June 5.

The Tohono O’odham Nation will also be opening its three Desert Diamond Casinos in southern Arizona at 1 p.m. on that date.

The West Valley branch debuted at 91st and Northern avenues just a month before closing down in response to the coronavirus pandemic on March 18.

The venue has installed plexiglass barriers and made other changes to accommodate social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

A first wave of Phoenix-area casinos reopened May 15, including Gila River Casinos at Lone Butte and Wild Horse Pass near Chandler and Vee Quiva in Laveen; Harrah’s Ak-Chin Hotel and Casino in Maricopa; and Fort McDowell Casino near Fountain Hills.

Two casinos near Scottsdale — Talking Stick Resort and Casino Arizona — have said they would remain closed at least through May but had not yet set reopening dates as of Tuesday.

Arizona’s casinos are operated by Native American tribes, who have the authority to make their own decisions about closing and reopening.
