PHOENIX — Democrat Ruben Gallego won the night in Tuesday’s general election and will represent Arizona’s Congressional District 7.
Gallego, a former state representative, beat out one-time Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox and two others in the August primary. He faced no Republican opposition in Tuesday’s election in the Democratic stronghold held by retiring Rep. Ed Pastor.
Gallego beat out Libertarian candidate Joe Cobb, Americans Elect candidate Rebecca DeWitt and Independent candidate Jose Penalosa for the seat.
Gallego was the favorite from the outset. Rather than focus on the general election, he turned his campaign machine to work in the favor of other candidates and to get people to vote.
“We’ve had 60 people going out every day for the last month and a half,” Gallego said. “There’s never been an operation like this in this district — but this district alone cannot turn the whole state.” Gallego pointed to similar efforts by Democratic Reps. Raul Grijalva and Ann Kirkpatrick to get Democratic voters to the polls as well.
