PHOENIX — Kris Mayes plans to investigate the effort by a slate of GOP electors to falsely declare Donald Trump the winner of the 2020 presidential election in Arizona once she takes office as attorney general early next month.

“I think that the people of Arizona can anticipate that we will investigate that situation,” Mayes told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s The Mike Broomhead Show on Tuesday. “I don’t think that’s the kind of thing that you can allow to go unreviewed and uninvestigated.”

Arizona was one of seven states where some Republicans allegedly met and submitted false Electoral College certificates declaring Trump as winner. President Joe Biden won all seven states.

Mayes, a Democrat, said part of her motivation to investigate the fake electors stems from what she considers a lack of action from outgoing Republican Attorney General Mark Brnovich.

“We haven’t seen much out of him in this office publicly,” Mayes said.

The groups met about a month before the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Former secretary of state candidate Mark Finchem, Rep. Andy Biggs and GOP Chair Kelli Ward were subpoenaed by the House committee investigating the insurrection over their alleged knowledge of the efforts.

“It’s not okay for anyone to engage in that kind of behavior,” Mayes said. “It’s not okay for anyone to essentially steal the the state seal and use it for their own purposes.”
