Deadline for Phoenix Children’s, Blue Cross Blue Shield agreement extended

PHOENIX — The current contract between Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Blue Cross Blue Shield has been extended through Dec. 15 during negotiations for a new agreement.

The hospital and the insurer had hoped to reach an agreement by Dec. 1.

“Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona (BCBSAZ) continue to work through a renewed network agreement,” Phoenix Children’s Hospital spokeswoman Erica Sturwold said in a statement Friday.

“We’re still optimistic that we’ll reach an agreement and will share network updates with BCBSAZ members as they become available,” she said.

If an agreement is not reached by Dec. 15, Phoenix Children’s would no longer be a contracted provider with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona.

Sturworld said last month that 31,000 families were notified that their coverage would be impacted if the hospital was dropped from the network.
