Data Doctor: Check with school for child’s technology needs

Summer is wrapping up, meaning students will start begging mom and dad for the newest gizmos out there.

But they might not need them.

Ken Colburn, with Data Doctors, said it is important for parents to contact the school and see what their child’s class calls for, rather than what the child wants.

“The first thing is to make sure they actually need this,” he said. “For instance, many people think tablets might be an alternative to laptops, but if your school requires your child to use Microsoft Office, that might be a hindrance.”

While some students may want to convince their parents they need the latest in smartphone or computer technology, Colburn said that may not be the truth.

“No student needs a smart phone or needs a tablet to be functional,” he said. “Generally speaking, they need an Internet-connected computer and, in some cases, a fully-functional laptop to run specific applications.”

Colburn recommends you check with your school to first learn what software systems your child will be working with.

When you do buy, avoid rock-bottom priced gear or refurbished equipment because it is typically below standards.
