Cross-border tunnel discovered under Nogales by Border Patrol

PHOENIX — An unfinished cross-border tunnel under the streets of Nogales was discovered by border agents Tuesday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced Thursday.

This is the second uncompleted tunnel discovered in the Tucson Sector this fiscal year and 126th since 1990.

The entrance was in the floor of the Grand Avenue drainage system in Mexico and about 580 yards west of the Dennis DeConcin Crossing at the Nogales Port of Entry.

About 30 feet of the tunnel had been dug. Its deepest point was about 15 to 20 feet underground.

It was hand-dug without shoring, ventilation or lighting.

A graphic tweeted by the CBP showed the tunnel stretch into United States soil, though it was too deep for an opening to have been made.
