Crews rescue driver stranded in flooded Phoenix-area wash

PHOENIX — Crews were able to rescue a driver who was trapped in a flooded Phoenix-area wash on Monday, authorities said.

Superstition Fire and Medical Capt. Mike Paul said the woman was crossing a wash near the center of Apache Junction when she became stuck.

“She was in the middle of it and a large wall of water caught her out in the middle of the wash,” he said.

Paul said crews reached the woman and made her wear a life vest and helmet before walking her to dry land. He said the woman was not injured.

“She was a little shaken up from the experience,” he said.

Paul said the woman entered the wash because she believed it was safe.

“She mentioned to me that it was just a few inches of water she was going through,” he said.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning that was in effect until 1 p.m. because of storms in the area.

Paul said the rescue should serve as an important safety reminder to everyone.

“It may not be raining directly overhead at the time, but when it’s raining up in the mountain areas, there could still be rain flooding those washes,” he said, adding that those who are trapped in a wash should stay in the car and call 911.
