Fire crews worked to rescue 2 hikers with heat exhaustion from Scottsdale trail
Rescue crews responded to a call at a Scottsdale trail just before noon for reports of a man and a woman in their 60s experiencing heat exhaustion.

Fire crews worked to rescue two hikers suffering from heat exhaustion on the Gateway Loop Trail in Scottsdale, authorities said.
Crews from the Scottsdale and Phoenix fire departments responded to a call at the trail near Thompson Peak Parkway at 11:44 a.m. A man and a woman in their 60s were reported to be suffering from heat exhaustion about two miles from the trailhead.
More than 25 firefighters and other personnel were called to the rescue. Four Scottsdale Fire e-bikes carrying advanced life support equipment were sent up the trail.
However, both hikers refused transportation, authorities said Saturday evening.
Scottsdale Fire said crews were considering multiple rescue plans, including using a utility vehicle. Another option was a big-wheel operation — a stretcher mounted on a single large all-terrain wheel.
The news comes as much of the Valley is under an extreme heat warning that is expected to last through Monday night.

It's a bit of a dichotomy. You would think that people on the north side of sixty would be wise enough to know the risks and avoid those risks; on the other hand, some of us on the north side of sixty seem to think we're just as strong, resilient and tough as when we were in our 20's. A famous Clint Eastwood/Dirty Harry line: a man's got to know his limitations.
