PHOENIX — The Creative Center of Scottsdale is opening five workspaces for local artists to rent in a former shooting supply store in Old Town Scottsdale.

Mandall’s Shooting Supplies opened in 1975 and shut its doors in the early 2000s. It was known for selling imported firearms and had an underground shooting gallery.

“With Mandall’s being such a historic part of Old Town Scottsdale, I wanted to make sure I honored that and kept the integrity of the original architecture,” Michelle Biely, owner of the Creative Center of Scottsdale, said in a news release.

Biely repurposed shipping containers and handmade filing cabinets from the supplies store in an effort to avoid the “traditional office feel.”

When remodeling the 4,000-square-foot building, Biely said she made sure to include tall ceiling windows and incorporate old signs into wall art.

“I created the center to fit the needs of the creative mind,” Biely said in the news release. “Artists don’t need a desk and computer, they need open space and natural light to see their visions come to life.”

Artists of any genre can rent a 10-by-10 area for $300 per month. This fee includes access to all building amenities, including internet access, a kitchenette, a courtyard and a pulley station for drying and displaying artwork.

The center also offers private studio options and drop-in day rates.
