Chain-reaction crash near Lake Pleasant kills Phoenix man, critically injures teen passenger

PHOENIX — A 54-year-old Phoenix man died and a teenage girl suffered life-threatening injuries Monday after a dump truck rear-ended their SUV on State Route 74 near Lake Pleasant.

Lance Estervig was pronounced dead at a hospital after the 11:45 a.m. collision near 87th Avenue, the Peoria Police Department said in a news release. A 17-year-old female passenger in his vehicle remains hospitalized with critical injuries.

According to investigators, the dump truck was traveling eastbound on SR 74 when it struck the rear of Estervig’s white Jeep Grand Cherokee. The impact caused the dump truck to leave the roadway and overturn onto its passenger side.

The wreck triggered a chain-reaction crash involving four vehicles. The Jeep spun into oncoming traffic and collided with a black Ford Expedition traveling westbound, police said.

The dump truck driver was not injured and remained at the scene, cooperating with detectives. A third driver involved in the crash was taken to a nearby hospital for minor injuries.

The Peoria Police Traffic Services Unit is investigating the cause of the wreck. No charges have been announced, and police have not said whether speed or impairment were factors in the crash.
