Civilian crashes into Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson

PHOENIX — A man was detained after crashing his vehicle into a gate at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson on Monday, officials said.

A spokesperson with the base said the civilian, whose identity was not released, tried to break through the base’s main gate on Craycroft Road around 8 a.m.

Base security personnel activated barriers to stop the vehicle, and the driver was detained.

The vehicle then burst into flames. Firefighters from the Davis-Monthan Fire Department extinguished the blaze.

The driver was taken to a local medical facility for treatment. According to KOLD, the man is facing a DUI investigation from the Tucson Police Department.

Second time a driver tried to crash into Air Force base in a year

Maj. Steve Holman, 355th Security Forces Squadron commander, commended those who responded.

“The security of our installation and the safety of our airmen are our top priority,” Holman said in a Monday statement.

Davis-Monthan Air Force Base is home to the 355th Wing, which is responsible for training and deploying A-10C Thunderbolt II pilots.

“Our defenders are trained professionals who act in accordance with their training and policy to secure the gate,” Holman said.

This incident took place less than a year after members of the squadron fatally shot a driver who crashed into the Craycroft barrier.
