Municipal court officer hit and killed by truck in downtown Phoenix

A Phoenix Municipal Court officer is dead after being struck by a truck in downtown Phoenix Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

PHOENIX — A Phoenix Municipal Court officer is dead after being struck by a truck in downtown Phoenix Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

The victim, later identified as 60-year-old Susan Hawkins, was hit outside of the Phoenix Municipal Court building, which is near Third Avenue and Adams Street.

The driver of the truck remained at the scene as Phoenix police and fire personnel responded around 4:30 p.m.

Hawkins, who served the city council since 1993, was taken to a nearby hospital and died from her injuries.

Councilwoman Ann O’Brien lauded Hawkins for her role in handling cases for the Municipal Court Neighborhood Services Department.

Susan’s service made a difference in ways many people may never fully realize, but residents and businesses across Phoenix benefit from every day,” O’Brien said in a statement. “She will be deeply missed and her commitment to our community will not be forgotten.”

Councilwoman Laura Pastor also expressed her condolences to Hawkins and her family.

“(Hawkins’) commitment to public service leaves a lasting impact, and her passing is deeply felt across our City family,” Pastor said. “I am grateful to our first responders and City leadership for their response and support during this difficult time.”

Detectives who took over the case said they believe the truck was turning when it struck Hawkins, who was walking north after exiting a parking structure elevator.

Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the fatal crash, police said.

No other information was provided. This investigation is ongoing.
