Councilwoman Betty Guardado appointed Phoenix vice mayor

PHOENIX — Phoenix has a new vice mayor.

Councilwoman Betty Guardado of District 5 was appointed to the role at the group’s meeting Tuesday.

“I know I have some big shoes to fill but am ready to work collaboratively with my fellow council members and our mayor to move Phoenix forward,” Guardado said in a press release.

She replaces Councilman Jim Waring of District 2 and will serve for one year under Mayor Kate Gallego.

Should a mayor step down, a vice mayor would take over for up to 15 days. After that, the City Council would appoint an interim to the post.

Guardado was elected to the council in May after an election in March led to a runoff vote.

She took District 5 with 62% of the vote, beating Vania Guevara, and replaced former mayoral candidate Daniel Valenzuela.
