PHOENIX — A Cottonwood man was sentenced to 145 years — 1,750 months — in federal prison for firing at law enforcement officers who went to a Tucson hotel to arrest him on a warrant two years ago.

Jack Witt Voris was sentenced Tuesday in Tucson for his assault and other convictions stemming from his arrest after a five-hour standoff at the hotel in late October 2016.

Evidence at trial showed that the 47-year-old Voris slammed the door at the hotel room when federal and local law enforcement officers went there to arrest him.

He then fired shots at officers, but missed. Voris eventually surrendered after a five-hour standoff with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

A jury convicted Voris on six counts of assault on a federal officer and weapons offenses in February.

“As a society governed by laws, we cannot tolerate assaults on our law enforcement officers,” First Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth A. Strange said in a statement.

“Our office is committed to prosecuting these cases, and we thank all of the agencies that assisted in this important investigation.
