Construction jobs on rebound in Valley

PHOENIX — The Associated General Contractors of America said Phoenix and Los Angeles added 6,200 construction jobs in June compared with a year ago, tps in the nation.

“We have a large project going on at Mayo, there’s the Intel project that has hundreds of people working out there,” said David Jones, a spokesman for the Arizona Construction Association.

Bu he also said he sees the downside of homebuilding firing up again — whether the bulk of the workforce returns.

“We lost 208,000 jobs in the recession. At the peak we had 265,000(construction workers).”

Many have moved to other states, many in the wake of tough immigration laws. Jones said returning troops could fill the gap but only to a small degree. The rest will have to come from other states.

“It is gypsy-type industry and people go to where the work is. But if they’re situated in another state and offered the same money to come to Arizona, why would they want to move?”
