PHOENIX — Construction began Monday on two buildings in Mesa that will be part of the nation’s first joint U.S.-Mexico customs processing hub.

SkyBridge Arizona, located on 360 acres southwest of the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, will inspect cargo on site and allow shipments to be expedited directly to destinations in Mexico, according to a press release.

The first two buildings being constructed are a 60,000-square-foot industrial building and an 82,500-square-foot hangar facility.

The project is expected to include 2 million square feet of warehouse space, 1.7 million square feet of industrial operations, 200,000 square feet of office space and 100,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space.

The development is looking to add tenants, including companies involved in air cargo, e-commerce, manufacturing and aviation.

Graycor Construction Company was chosen to design and build SkyBridge’s first two buildings.

Todd Ostransky, the company’s Southwest Division vice president, said the project is important to the evolution of the area.

“Phoenix has long been known as a logistics hub, but SkyBridge will take the Valley to a new level of supply chain opportunity,” he said in the release.

Mayor John Giles called the project a “gamechanger” for trade between the U.S. and Mexico.
