Collision on I-10 near Tonopah kills 6, sends 5 others to hospital

PHOENIX — A multi-vehicle collision on eastbound Interstate 10 near Tonopah on Friday killed six people and sent five others to the hospital, authorities said.

The collision occurred just before 1:30 p.m. when a tractor-trailer for an unknown reason rear-ended a car, with the force of the impact splitting the vehicle in half and killing all five in the car.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials confirmed Saturday a sixth person passed away from the incident.

The tractor-trailer then continued eastbound before striking an SUV that had a mother and her four children on board.

All five were taken to Valley hospitals with serious injuries, authorities said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer is not injured.

An investigation into the collision is ongoing and no additional information was immediately available.
