City of Surprise breaks ground on fire station to replace temporary facility

PHOENIX – One West Valley suburb took a big step this week toward replacing a temporary fire station with a permanent facility.

Surprise held a groundbreaking ceremony Monday at 163rd Avenue and San Ysidro Road, the future home of Fire Station 304.

The new station will be built to the south of the temporary one and is expected to be completed in fall 2020, the city said in a press release.

The new station is needed to serve the city’s growing northern region and provide upgraded security for the Surprise Fire-Medical Department’s apparatus, the release said.

Equipment is stored in an open-air steel structure at the temporary site.

Construction will be paid for through the Decide Surprise General Obligation Bond that voters approved in 2017.

Other projects in the bond plan include an additional fire station and a police training facility, both of which are expected to open in 2022.
