Cindy McCain named chairman of Washington, DC-based think tank

PHOENIX — A Washington, D.C.-based think tank named after the late Sen. John McCain has a new chairman: Cindy McCain.

The McCain Institute recently announced that it had named the senator’s widow as the new chair of the board, nearly two months after McCain died at the age of 85 after a yearlong battle with brain cancer.

“The mission of the McCain Institute, to advance values-based leadership around the world, has always been important to my family,” Cindy McCain said in a statement.

“I believe the work of the Institute, from fighting human trafficking to training the next generation of international leaders to advancing human rights and democracy, is more important now than ever,” she added.

“I’m honored to take on this role, particularly as the Institute undertakes an ambitious set of new initiatives to expand its impact.”

The McCain Institute was founded in 2012 as part of Arizona State University in order to “advance leadership based on security, economic opportunity, freedom, and human dignity, in the United States and around the world,” according to its website.

“Cindy McCain’s inspirational leadership already has helped us accomplish so much,” Arizona State University President Michael Crow said in a statement.

“I salute her selfless commitment to serve in this capacity. It makes a uniquely impactful institute, uniquely more so.”
