Cindy McCain may never get over Trump insults of her husband

PHOENIX — Cindy McCain, widow of Arizona Sen. John McCain, said she may never get over President Donald Trump insulting her husband’s war record three years ago while on the campaign trail.

“I thought it was inappropriate and wrong. It hurt the family too. And it hurt the other men that served with John. … I don’t know if I’ll ever get over it, to be honest,” McCain told the BBC in an interview released Wednesday.

“But I’m a wife — that’s my prerogative. I don’t have to.”

Trump criticized John McCain’s military record in front of an audience in Iowa, saying the 2008 Republican presidential nominee and Vietnam prisoner of war was a “war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

The senator, who died of brain cancer in August, was held captive for over five years after his Navy jet was shot down in 1967.

He and Trump bumped heads for the remainder of the senator’s career. Trump was not invited to the memorial service held in Washington, D.C., where guests included former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush and former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

“I didn’t want any disruption,” McCain said of excluding Trump, although his daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner attended.

“This was about John, not abut anything else at all. It was important to me that we kept it respectful and calm and not politicize it, (which sounds) funny coming from a political family,” she said.

“But it was important we kept it with dignity.”
