Cindy McCain calls on Americans to bridge political divide in op-ed piece

PHOENIX — Cindy McCain penned a column for CNN Monday calling for Americans to come together and bridge the political divide following a divisive election.

The widow of the late Sen. John McCain, along with former U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, said in the article there are three things Americans need to respect: election results, political differences and the need to move on.

“The victory of our new President-elect, Joe Biden, created a palpable sense of relief for us and over 80 million other Americans. However, while much of the country rejoices, others are filled with resignation and even rage,” they wrote.

“These divergent reactions reveal an important truth—that the rift in our politics runs deeper than Donald Trump. We must reinvest in our civic culture if we hope to move forward together.”

They argued that they know it may seem challenging to accept other’s ideological differences, but there is no other way for the country to progress and heal from the election.

“Seeing each other as people instead of partisans is a critical step to working with one another to overcome our shared struggles,” they said.

McCain spoke at the 2020 Democratic National Convention over the summer, although she still remains a Republican.

She also endorsed now-President-elect Joe Biden, calling him the best person for the position, and appeared in ads for his campaign.

In a show of bipartisanship, it has been speculated that Biden is considering McCain as the next ambassador to the U.K., according to a November report from The Hill.
