Child taken to hospital as precaution after apartment fire in Mesa

A child was taken to the hospital and an adult was minorly injured after a fire at a Mesa apartment on Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The Mesa Fire and Medical Department explained that the child was transported for evaluation as a precaution, adding the adult suffered a minor hand cut while evacuating the apartment.

Fire crews were called to Dobson and Broadway roads around 2:40 p.m. for reports of smoke and flames coming from a second-floor apartment, according to officials.

When firefighters arrived, they found a fire in the kitchen that had spread to the surrounding cabinets and began to rapidly gain control of the blaze.

Crews then searched the apartment and neighboring units while confirming the fire didn’t extend to the attic or adjoining walls. They also ventilated the building and safely secured the apartment’s utilities.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. However, fire officials reminded residents never to leave cooking unattended as well as to keep combustible items away from stovetops.
