Chandler unveils new facility for training police, fire personnel

PHOENIX — Chandler’s police and fire departments have a new training facility.

The Chandler Public Safety Training Center, on South Dobson Road, features an auditorium, public meeting space, classrooms, a climbing tower and more.

Mayor Jay Tibshraeny, Police Chief Sean Duggan and Fire Chief Tom Dwiggins were among those on hand Wednesday for the grand opening.

“It highlights our focus to continue to provide our residents the finest police and fire responders in the state — if not the country,” Tibshraeny said.

The center — which is 29,000 square feet — will provide the best and latest training for all of the East Valley city’s first responders.

Duggan said policing is always changing.

“(The latest training) will help us meet those changes head-on,” he said, “and really address the challenges of 21st-century policing. Not just now, but well into the future.”

Dwiggins agreed.

“(The police and fire departments) will create some synergistic effect that will lead to opportunities to explore new solutions to common problems we see out in the field,” he said.

In October, ground will be broken on a new police firing range.

There are plans to have fire and police personnel train in active shooter drills there.
