Chances of rain in metro Phoenix, followed by cold fronts this week

PHOENIX — Pull out your windbreaker jackets and rain boots, chances of wet weather and cold fronts are in this week’s Valley weather forecast.

An increase in rain chances were predicted for Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, with cold fronts following Thursday through Sunday mornings, the National Weather Service said.

Chances of rain are higher than 80%, however, forecasters predicted the totals will be .25 inches or less, with chances of thunderstorms remaining less than 10 percent, NWS said.

Across the lower desert Thursday through Sunday, temperatures in the early morning will range between 35 to 45 degrees, NWS said.

A high wind warning has been issued for south-central Arizona, with up to 30 mph gusts and occasionally stronger gusts in higher elevations of 40 to 55 mph, NWS said. Mountain peaks north and east of Phoenix are most likely to be affected.

Commuters are encouraged to secure light objects so they don’t become airborne while driving, while residents are advised to secure loose items, including holiday decorations.

Drivers should also make extra time for traveling, or adjust travel plans, if heading north or west of Phoenix as plans may be negatively impacted by the incoming weather system and traffic.

In Flagstaff, residents are preparing for gusts of up to 60 mph and accumulating snow above 5,000 feet Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

ADOT reminds those traveling in cold and wintry conditions to make sure to fill the fuel tank, have a fully-charged phone, drinking water and warm blankets in the vehicle.

Slower speed and slower acceleration is also strongly encouraged for wet or slippery roads.
