Burglars swipe bronze name plates from Phoenix cemetery, items from nearby church

Authorities are asking the public for help in their investigation into the theft of plaques and other items worth thousands of dollars from a Phoenix cemetery and church.

Burglars stole 17 bronze name plaques from a cemetery on 48th Street between Thomas and McDowell roads on Aug. 12, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

The plaques are valued at approximately $25,000, police said.

On Aug. 26, two suspects stole copper/bronze items from a church on Thomas Road east of 48th Street, about a mile from the cemetery.

Police released photos and a description of a vehicle believed to be involved in the burglaries. It is described as an older black Jeep Grand Cherokee with aftermarket silver rims, a roof rack, a temporary license plate and a driver’s side rear reverse light that doesn’t function.
