Cave Creek school cancels in-person class Tuesday amid staff shortage

PHOENIX — Cactus Shadows High School has canceled in-person class on Tuesday due to not having enough staff to safely open, according to a post on the district’s Facebook page Friday night.

“We determined that with the need for safety to be our utmost concern it would be impossible to reach those parameters with the current projected staffing,” Tony Vining, the school’s principal, wrote in the post.

Cactus Shadows High School will divert to the distance learning model, according to the post, with an update of the situation on Tuesday for the rest of the week.

Arizona health officials reported Thursday that Maricopa County, where the high school is located, had met all three coronavirus benchmarks recommended for safely starting in-person learning.

This is the second instance of school being canceled due to a staff shortage, as the J.O. Combs Unified School District in San Tan Valley canceled the return to in-person instruction on Aug. 14 after too many staffers called out.
