Hiker dies 1 day after being airlifted off Camelback Mountain due to serious medical emergency

A hiker died on Tuesday. He was airlifted off Camelback Mountain in Phoenix Monday after having a serious medical emergency.

PHOENIX – A hiker died on Tuesday one day after a serious medical emergency required him to be airlifted off Camelback Mountain in Phoenix, authorities said.

Phoenix and Tempe rescue teams were dispatched to the Echo Canyon Trailhead around 9:30 a.m. on Monday, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

Initial reports said the man was unconscious and not breathing when crews made contact with him near the summit.

“Firefighters immediately began advanced resuscitation efforts,” Capt. Todd Keller said in a media advisory.

He was in extremely critical condition when a Phoenix Police Department helicopter flew him off the mountain and to a hospital, authorities said.

No other details were immediately available.
